Position of Trust Gone Awry, Basketball Coach Hits Player’s Groins in Prank

Meet Basketball Coach Gregory Lynn Burr, 28. He faces 39 criminal counts ranging from child abuse resulting in serious injury to sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. Incidents allegedly occurred from September 2005 to March 2006 at Monument Academy in Monument Colorado, where he was employed. Alledgedly, 10 students ranging from 14 to 17 years of age were subject to abuse.

A student signed an affadavit that reports that Burr would ask students to identify the capital of Thailand and when they responded ‘Bangkok,’ he would hit them in the groin.

Some of the players say they were hit in the groin 30 to 40 times but they didn’t report it to school officials, fearing that they would be kicked off the basketball team. Players said Burr hit them with his hand, basketballs and tennis balls and laughed during the abuse even when players cried with pain.

Alledgedly, Burr also showed pornographic pictures on his computer to students who visited his home for a sleepover. He reportedly threw water on students he was transporting in his car and then roll down the car windows and exposed them to frigid temperatures while they were wet.

All counts considered, Burr could face 10 to 32 years in prison. His wife Sharalee was recently fired as Athletic Director at Monument Academy.
