Extra Large Autopsy Tables Needed for Obese Population in Florida

The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner’s Office now uses an autopsy table that supports 1,000 pounds. The standard for the autopsy table used to be around 300 pounds, but now 300 lbs is becoming a norm with at least one autopsy on a 300-pound person per week.

Larger morgue drawers and other equipment used to carry and store the dead are also in demand because working with extra large bodies are difficult on standard size autopsy tables.

More than 20 percent of Florida residents are obese.
