On Monday March 16, 2009 Natasha Richardson, 45, was taking a ski lesson without a helmet (she declined the offer to wear a helmet) on a beginner slope at the Mont Tremblant ski resort north of Montreal, with an instructor. Toward the end of the lesson, Richardson fell and struck her head and the ski instructor called the ski patrol for assistance. She was alert and conversational afterward, even joking about her fall, and did not complain of any ill effects. One hour later, in her hotel room, she developed a severe headache.

Ambulance dispatch records obtained by the New York Times show that Richardson was not hospitalized until almost four hours after suffering the brain injury that ultimately killed her — three hours after developing symptoms.

Yves Coderre, director of operations for Ambulances Radisson, which provided the emergency transport for Natasha Richardson, had told the Toronto Globe and Mail that when paramedics initially arrived 1 p.m. at the Mont Tremblant resort, they were told they were not needed. As they were turned away, paramedics did observe from a distance that Natasha Richardson was sitting on a stretcher at the resort.

The next request for the ambulance for Natasha Richardson, still conscious, came at about 3:00 p.m. followed by a reported “enroute hospital” time of 3:42 p.m. to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste. Agathe — a 25-mile trip from Mont Temblant.

At 4:20 p.m. Natasha Richardson was examined by a physician.

A transfer was ordered to a larger hospital in Montreal, the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal. Natasha Richardson arrived at the Montreal hospital at about 7:00 p.m. Monday.

Tuesday, Natasha Richardson was accompanied by husband Liam Neeson and flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City in critical condition, where she died on Wednesday after surgery.

Epidural or extradural hematoma (haematoma) is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in which a buildup of blood occurs between the dura mater (the tough outer membrane of the central nervous system) and the skull. The dura mater also covers the spine, so epidural bleeds may also occur in the spinal column. Often due to trauma, the condition is potentially deadly because the buildup of blood may increase pressure in the intracranial space and compress delicate brain tissue. Because the bleed come from an artery the pressure can build up quickly while there is an eye before the storm giving the condition the name ‘Talk and die syndrome.’ The condition is present in one to three percent of head injuries.Between 15 and 20% of patients with epidural hematomas die of the injury. Epidural hematoma is usually found on the same side of the brain as impact.

Skull fractures often accompany epidural hematomas.

Signs & Symptoms of Epidural Hematoma
Expanding hematoma causes headache, nausea, and vomiting. Shifting brain tissue causes local brain dysfunction such as weakness, numbness, or speech problems. If severe progression of the hematoma occurs, central areas of the brain and the brainstem become displaced, causing loss of conscious, abnormal positioning of the arms and legs (decerebrate posture). At this point irreversible brainstem damage can occur. Documentation exists of rapid deteriorating conditions from injury to decerebrate posture in as little as two hours.

Full symptom list in severe head injury:
A lasting headache which worsens, or is still present over six hours following the injury.
Extreme difficulty in staying awake, or still being sleepy several hours after the injury.
Two or more bouts of vomiting.
Unconsciousness, either for a short or extended period of time.
Unequal pupil size.
Straw colored or blood stained fluid coming from the nose or ears. This is cerebrospinal fluid which normally surrounds the brain.
Severe dizziness or loss of balance.
Confusion or strange behavior.
Problems with memory.
Bleeding from the scalp that cannot be quickly stopped.
Not being able to use part of the body, such as weakness in an arm or leg.
Difficulty seeing or double vision.
Slurred speech
Unusual breathing patterns.
Ringing or deafness in one or both ears.
Having a seizure or fit (when your body suddenly moves uncontrollably).

An autopsy revealed that a torn artery bled between the outer lining of the brain and the skull.

On February 16, 2007 Stallone was detained in Sydney, Australia at the airport after he arrived to promote Rocky Balboa. Customs officials searched bags and confiscated items. Customs officials found 48 vials of the human growth hormone (hGH) Jintropin in Stallone’s personal luggage. Three days later Stallone’s hotel room was searched and items were confiscated. Stallone and his entourage were allowed to depart Australia and he was not required to appear in a Sydney local court for a hearing.

Interviewing officers asking Stallone why he took Jintropin reported that he said:

As you get older, the pituitary gland slows and you feel older, your bones narrow.
This stuff gives your body a boost and you feel and look good. Doing Rambo is hard work and I am going to be in Burma for a while. Where do you think I am going to get this stuff in Burma? [Stallone was preparing to go on location near the Thailand/Burma* border to film Rambo (2008).]

Stallone was charged with one count of importing a prohibited import. Human Growth Hormone is banned under the Australian Customs Act and is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a muscle building aid.

In a court hearing on May 15, 2007, Stallone pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a controlled substance.

In a written apology from Stallone, delivered to the court on May 15, Stallone said:

I made a terrible mistake. Not because I was attempting to deceive anyone but I was simply ignorant of your official rules and I wish to sincerely apologize to the court and the Australian community for my breach of Australian customs law. … I have never supported the use of illegal drugs or engaged in any illegal activities in my entire life … I wish to express my deepest remorse and again apologize for my actions.

Stallone said the drugs had been prescribed to him for a medical condition. He claimed he was carrying large amounts of hGH because he was about to go on location for three months in Thailand to shoot another movie, Rambo (2008).

On May 21, 2007 he was formally convicted of importing restricted muscle-building hormones into Australia and ordered to pay more than $9,870 in fines and court costs.

In January 2008, multiple media sources reported that Sylvester Stallone admitted using Human Growth Hormone “to get buff.” In a Time magazine interview (Feb. 4), Stallone revealed that he increased his body mass to 209 pounds while using prescription testosterone.

Sylvester Stallone on TODAY during interview with Matt Lauer.

On Today (Jan. 11) Stallone appeared promoting Rambo (2008) in an interview with Matt Lauer. He also defended his hGH use. Stallone explained that you don’t take hGH to be pumped. Stallone said that it’s archaic to think of hGH as a steroid. “It’s amino acids — 191 of them,” Stallone said. “You have to put in years and years and years of hard labor to stay in shape,” he said in response to Lauer’s question of whether Stallone would take hGH to enhance his appearance for a movie role. “[hGH] it takes off the wear and tear … especially if you’re an athlete. The amount of beating that your body takes … the power to recuperate is very limited. So all it does is expedite.”

Rambo (2008): A hellhole beyond your wildest dreams.
Stallone: “All the trails are mined. The only way into Burma is up the river … Shots fired over crew’s head(s).”

People magazine is reporting that Stallone said regarding the filming of Rambo (2008), “There were a lot of death threats … It was a very volatile, dangerous situation. We were filming in territory that was being controlled by some rough players and they didn’t want any light shown on this dilemma, this civil war that’s been going on for 60 years.”

ABC News reported that Stallone and his “Rambo” sequel movie crew witnessed the human toll of unspeakable atrocities while filming along the Myanmar border. “I witnessed the aftermath, survivors with legs cut off and all kinds of land-mine injuries, maggot-infested wounds and ears cut off,” Stallone told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday. “We hear about Vietnam and Cambodia and this was more horrific.”

A Soldier of Fortune article reported in depth about the state of affairs along the Salween River that borders Thailand and Burma. Stallone explained that from Thailand, “We could actually see the meth labs on the other side. It was unbelievable. I kept saying, ‘Why are these soldiers around these crappy warehouses?’ They told me that each general or colonel has his own business going.”

Sylvester Stallone first got his inspiration to pursue exercise and nutrition when he saw Steve Reeves (a former Mr. Universe) in HERCULES UNCHAINED (1959). At 13 years old — in addition to Hercules: Unchained — Stallone was astounded with films such as Goliath and the Barbarians (1959) and The Thief of Baghdad (1961). Sylvester Stallone was also inspired (to get lean and cut) by the Tarzan movie Greystoke (1984).

While training for Rocky II (1979), Sylvester Stallone trained hard with two time Mr. Olympia Franco Columbo, but suffered a torn pectoralis muscle, which required a four-hour surgical repair.

For the lean look with developed muscles that was inspired by the movie Greystoke (1984), Stallone began a hardcore weight-lifting program, working out twice a day. For Rambo III (1988), Stallone dropped weight to 168 pounds. He put on weight slowly and got sinewy, hard-cut muscles — gradually increasing his body weight to 200 lbs with a body fat of 3.8 percent. Later Sylvester Stallone stabilized his body fat at 6.8%.

Vital Signs:
Blood Pressure: 122/70 mm Hg
Triglycerides: 65
Cholesterol: 135.

Nutrition:
Eats three egg whites and a half yolk for breakfast, along with Irish oatmeal, toast and fresh papaya.

Eats chicken and fish.

Eats red meat once a week.

Eats lots of fruits and vegetables.

Developed a special low-fat, high energy spaghetti and pizza, which he considered marketing.

Gave up shellfish because of water pollution and contamination issues.

Ergogenic Aid/Anabolic Supplementation
In January 2008, Sylvester Stallone admitted using Human Growth Hormone “to get buff.” On February 16, 2007 Stallone was detained in Sydney Australia at the airport.

Featured on FNC IMAG; Celebrity Trainer and co-owner of Peak Performance provides an informative presentation on kickboxing techniques for use in physical conditioning. The teaser ‘Get Eva’s Body’ uses the Eva Mendes name, but Mendes is only mentioned as a client of Joe Dowdell, who demonstrates a kickbox workout designed to tone entire body, increase lean muscle mass and decrease body fat.

Dowdell defines basic kickboxing strikes with another trainer (Stacia Cato) while the viewer assumes this is a workout that Eva Mendes might do.

Cross: The Cross is a bigger range of motion punch that uses the power hand in a punch that is thrown across and toward the target with the dominant hand.

Dowdell give cues like left, right, jab, cross.

Hook: Next Dowdell introduces the Hook. The Hook is a punch delivered from the side with the elbow bent. The hook is performed with the Jab hand.

Now a new combination is performed: left, right, hook, right.

Uppercut: Next the Uppercut is introduced. The Uppercut is a swinging blow directed upward with the dominant hand.

Left, right, hook, uppercut are the cues.

Joe Dowdell summarizes the four basic strikes: Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut. Then he adds a defensive move for his partner. Now there is a duck under the punch from the opponent and then a return strike to the opponent. It’s important to keep the hands up defensively when you duck.

Time to practice a combination: Left, right, duck, right.

Roundhouse Kick: Next Dowdell and Cato move on to work the legs with a roundhouse kick. He switches to longer pads (Focus Mitts) to protect his forearms as he is the defensive partner taking the blows.

[Here is where a note pops up on the screen that says thay Joe likes to mix up Eva's workout with kickboxing one a week.]

Left, right, kick (with the right leg in a roundhouse kick).

Now a more complex combination …
Left, right, duck, right, kick

Front Kick: Next, a front kick is brought into the mix … but the front kick is practiced isolated, each leg. A reminder is issued to keep the hands up.

Left, right, hook, right, duck, right, kick (roundhouse used). The front kick was not used in the combination drills.

Comedian David Spade, 43, was rushed to hospital on Sunday (January 6, 2008) after he collapsed at a gym. Spade was working out in a Los Angeles gym when he collapsed and required urgent medical attention.

Spade’s publicist says, “David has been fighting severe bronchitis and a sinus infection over the past week, and was on the road for three gigs during his illness.” A possible adverse reaction to antibiotics has also been reported. Spade got an I.V. at the hospital and was sent home to rest.

Rumors spread that he had a heart attack. Not true. He’s resting and getting better.

A star entertainer has a workload that is tough on the human body. While the image of a pampered lifestyle in Beverly Hills might be prevalent to the adoring public, the reality of an entertainer’s life is a world of long acting schedules, travel, public appearance schedules and interviews.

And it is often lonely at the top. While being chased by annoying paparazzi, there is a constant stress of maintaining a successful image. A partying lifestyle is readily available with exposure to excessive alcohol intake, drugs and easy money. There is always a group of people ready to point out a hypocrisy, find a human flaw, or bring news of inappropriate or even criminal behavior. Often any routine public errand reminds a celebrity that their public life is no longer their own domain.

The successful entertainer can master any negative publicity and turn it into positive fame, find time to stay in shape and even modify their shape for an acting role, get enough rest, delegate to trustworthy advisers and assistants, stay away from injuries while at work or at play, stay away from substance abuse, and keep those acting roles and endorsement offers coming.
